This Year's Christmas List!

So what's a better time than Black Friday to post my Christmas List. To preface this extensive list, this is much, much more than I would ever expect to be under the tree but it's the list of all the things I've accumulated on my want-list over the past few months. This is definitely the most random list that I've ever had but each item has it's reasons! All product links can be found {at my Polyvore account here}!! Without further ado, and in no particular order, I'll dive right in!

1. Quality leather sandals: With a extended trip to Milan coming up this summer as well as my focus on really investing in shoes these three are next on my shopping list. They each three would be staple shoes that go with any and everything and I'm particularly eyeing those silver Seychelles. The thick heel and the neutral color are a safe bet with a twist.

2. Evelyn Henson Prints: I saw these prints a while ago and I'm loving that her store is extending cities. These map prints of Lexington and Memphis have my heart in a nostalgic way and would be perfect for any room! If only she had an Antwerp print!

3. J.Crew Barrettes: I love J.Crew's hair accessories. I have collected a few tortoise shell hairbands that I use constantly but I'm in need of some barrettes with a currently growing bob and these are perfect!

4. Olay Skin Brush: One of my roommates has a Clarisonic that she absolutely swears by but I see the price to be utterly unreasonable. I've searched around for other brushes that have the same basic function, without moisturizing pads that would do the trick. The Olay brush has great reviews and is only a fraction of the price of the Clarisonic. My face is begging for this under the tree!

5. Compact Point & Shoot Camera: I have a SLR Canon that I invested in during high school and it was one of my best purchases I've ever made. While it's a great camera, the sheer size has it's drawbacks. Especially when traveling abroad this summer, I wished I had a smaller more portable camera for those times that I had a tiny cross body or needed to be able to sneakily take a photo in a no-photozone cathedral! This would be perfect for nights on the town, more active adventures and the ability to throw in a small purse!

6. Small Crossbody: I'm in need of a good-quality purse to carry around with me everywhere. I love these simple structured cross body purses from Kate Spade and Fossil. I'm looking for a bright pink or turqoise color or a neutral gold!

7. Camp Socks: These socks are from LandsEnd and have great reviews but I'm also a fan of my tried and true Camp socks from J.Crew. Who said getting socks for Christmas was such a bad thing? I love these around the house and tucked into boots to be more cozy and warm!

8. Dave Matthews Antwerp Print: This print has all of my favorite things. It's the poster for the DMB concert in Antwerp a few years back and it has so many memorable symbols of the city that I love. What a cool addition this would be to a room!

9. Italian Lessons: Wow, never thought I'd be asking for this but I'm really looking for some Italian lessons. With a summer spent by myself, in a city with a completely foreign language, I need to know some basics. I'm not sure if Rosetta Stone really is the program that I would learn best in but there are some General Italian Lessons in Memphis and some geared specifically for business in Italy. I'm keeping my eye out for some of these and to have these as a gift would be so appreciated!

What is making your list this year?

This Thanksgiving: 10 Things I'm Oh So Thankful For

Thanksgiving is good for us all. Not just for the acceptable day of an overindulgence of carbs but, more importantly, because it gives us a time to think of all the things we're thankful for. Even if you don't go around the table and formally state these things it's still in the back of your mind. We all need to do this every once in a while. It's easy to take for granted the great things in our life. Here's the list that I've been thinking about the past few days and it came out to a perfect number 10. So in no particular order, here are 10 things that I am oh-so-thankful for during this past year.

1. Family // Family is important and I'm lucky to have the family that I do. Being in college really makes me appreciate the time that I spend with my family even more and I'm always thankful for the time to relax around such a supportive and loving group.

2. The Very Best Friends // I'm not sure what I would do without my best friends. I know I would have a lot less blackmail-potential photos and way less embarrassing stories but I wouldn't change it for the world. I'm thankful for my the best friends that have at school, the best roommates that I get to live with daily and the best friends I have that are only a phone call away. These goobers are for life and I'm so appreciative.

 3. Kappa Delta // It may sound cheesy but KD has given me so much more than I would have ever thought. Not only did it give me an extensive collection of t-shirts but it also opened up to me a network of 200 amazing women, introduced me to the above mentioned best friends at school and gave me the opportunity to have a hands on role in leadership. AOT to all of my sisters. I'm so thankful to be apart of this incredible organization.

4. A Happy Home // Thanksgiving is a time that I do reflect on some of the things that I am lucky to have like food on the table and a roof over my head. I am so thankful for a happy home both in Lexington and Memphis where I feel safe, welcomed and loved. A bed is a beautiful thing and shouldn't be taken for granted.

5. Opportunity to Study Abroad // It might sound cliche but studying abroad truly changed my life and I will forever be appreciative of such an amazing opportunity. Not only did I get a chance to learn in Antwerp classrooms my favorite subjects but I learned of my independence, unquenchable curiosity and a passion for travel. I'm thankful for all of the things that made this possible and all of the alterations that this experience had on my outlook on life.

6. My School // To keep it simple: I picked the right one and it's a great feeling to be completely sure of that. The opportunities that Rhodes has opened up to me has been unbelievable and something that I hadn't expected. The chance to live in a soulful city, the ability and financial aid to study abroad, the chance to work at the core of some of the campuses main operations, one-of-a-kind classes with incredible professors and brilliant students have made my 3 years spectacular and I cannot wait for the fourth. I'm so thankful for this beautiful campus and the amazing opportunities that it has offered.

7. A Time to Date Myself // This summer I finally got the chance to focus on solely me and this summer I started a great relationship with myself. I learned the importance of treating myself, taking care of myself and really getting to know who I am. Just like the feeling of knowing I picked the right school, it's even better to know exactly who you are and feel completely you. I'm so appreciative of the opportunity to make my own decisions purely for me and to guiltlessly live out my dreams. I'd urge anyone to take the time to date themselves and I'm appreciative of the chance I've gotten to do this.

8. Road trips // The road trips that I took this summer, besides the big one across the pond, really stuck out in my mind when looking over this year. Whether they were a 30 minute drive to a hike, an hour and a half drive to a concert or a six hour drive to a much needed lake weekend I'm so thankful. The chance to get away and take your mind away from routine is always needed and the soul-searching that also comes along with these drives and mini-vacations is a much appreciated added perk.

9. A Good Pair of Running Shoes, Some Concert Tickets and a Netflix Subscription // These are luxuries that I am so happy to have. I'm happy to know the little indulgences that make me happy and I'm happy to have them in my life. I'm thankful that I found a free therapy in running. I'm thankful for the chance to go to concerts this year with my favorite people and I'm thankful for the mini treat once in a while that is a Netflix binge. I'm lucky to have these luxuries and on Thanksgiving I'm giving them their much needed appreciation on my list.

10. Emily and Dot // Last but not least, Emily and Dot has made the list. I started E&D at the beginning of this year and it's completely blown me away by, first that I've actually stuck with it, and secondly by what it's grown into. What started out as a way to jot down random thoughts has turned into a daily ritual, a business venture and a way to meet other amazing bloggers in this crazy little universe. I'm so so happy and so very thankful for what Emily and Dot has become and I'm thankful for the readers like you that have made this happen.

So here's my list and I guarantee I have left many things out but I'm lucky to have the things in my life that I do. We always need time to sit down and reflect upon the things that we're grateful for.

What made your list this year?

My Fall Nail Color Picks!

First day at home for break and man it feels good. I definitely needed a break and Thanksgiving always falls at the perfect time to relax a little and indulge. By indulging I don't just mean at the dinner table on Thursday but also by sleeping in, watching a good movie and getting my nails done! Besides an hour of relaxation, fall nails can really put you in the seasonal mood! Here are some of my favorite Essie colors that I'm gravitating towards this time of year!

What color is your favorite?!

Just Can't Get Enough: The Carrie Diaries

School has slowed down a little bit since my everlasting midterms. This past week gave me some much needed me-time. Finally! I finally had time to go on daily runs, get off campus and indulge in the ultimate guilty pleasure, Netflix. I've run through all of the seasons offered of my favorites like Gossip Girl, Grey's Anatomy and New Girl and I've gotten a little bored with others like Mad Men and The Office. I spent a lazy day this weekend searching for a new show and I found it: The Carrie Diaries. Ah I'm hooked! It covers the high school life of Carrie Bradshaw, before Sex and the City. It shows her falling in love with Manhattan as she interns at Interview Magazine. It is a little cheesy at times but it's an easy watch and the clothes are amazing! If you haven't seen it yet check it out!

What's your latest Netflix guilty pleasure?

Pause: I'm Living in Milan?!

A few weeks ago I wrote a post {here} about going for your dreams even if they sound far-fetched. A little while after I wrote this I got some big news, good news but big, and it was one of those moments that really stops you in your tracks. I made a big step towards my dreams for the future and I'm coming to the conclusion that even though it sounds cheesy, everything I said in the post really is true. Sometimes you just have to jump in and go for it. Honestly, most of the time it will fail but those times that they pay off are unbelievably magical. I've laid a few hints around E&D about my plans in my post about applying for internships {here} and relentless wanderlust {here} but this past week all of these things came together.

So what's the big news? Let's start at the beginning. Recently, I applied for a scholarship provided by my school that would fund an internship abroad, anywhere in the world, for the entire summer. Historically, my school has sent students to the same cities with many of the same companies. I started writing my application for one of these programs but in the middle of it,  I figured if I was applying for something so far-fetched anyways then I might as well go all in. I decided to throw in all of the cards and take a risk. I wanted to ask for my ultimate dream, many people's ultimate dream, knowing that I was possibly diminishing my chances for the scholarship. I applied to intern in Milan for a fashion creative agency. Crazy, I know.

It was risky.  Honestly, as soon as I turned in the application I regretted it and told myself to start forgetting about it because I was sure it was impossible. Fast track a few weeks to last Thursday. I finally got the much dreaded email but, here's the good news,  I've never been more blown away in my life. It paid off. I picked the ultimate dream, working in the fashion industry in Milan, and now I'm headed there this summer. I threw in all of the chips and, holy crap, I'm going to be living in Milan!

It's been pretty neat to see the culmination of all of my hardwork and right now, I'm having a blast seeing how my life is unfolding. It all does pay off. Keep working your butt off and amazing things will happen. It just comes to show that one of my favorite quotes really is true: the harder you work, the luckier you get. I'm having trouble wrapping my mind around the fact that Emily and Dot will be written out of Milan this summer but I couldn't be happier.

Life is good,
Emily

The 5 Albums I'm Listening To Right Now

I tend to go in waves of listening to my, already massive, collection in iTunes and then spending days searching through the internet to find new music. Lately it's been the later and I've been a total music junkie. These are the last few albums I've bought and I've been listening to constantly. Not all of them are new, but they definitely are all fantastic!

It all started with Maroon 5. Let me explain. My Maroon 5 playlist on Pandora is absolutely perfected. I've had it for years and after up voting and down voting songs as they've come through it's a treasure. With midterms this playlist and I were buddies for hours and songs off of Maroon 5's Hands All Over album kept coming around. I finally took the plunge and actually purchased the album. This was long overdue. This album is classic. It's one of my favorite go-to albums in the car and it's also one of my favorites to run to!
Song to check out: Stutter

Second, we have Andy Grammer's Magazines or Novels. LOVE THIS. Once again, the song Back Home kept coming up on my Pandora station so I clicked into iTunes to check out the rest of the album. This is definitely a change from his last album featuring songs like "Head Up". I loved the old Andy Grammer sound but this really stepped it up a notch. It's another great album for running but also getting ready in the mornings. It puts me in such a great mood!
Song to check out: Honey, I'm Good

Here's an older, new-to-me album. This 2013 John Mayer album, Paradise Valley was fairly new to me. I heard the song "On the Way Home" the other day in a coffee shop and after looking up the rest of the album fell in love. It's a change from the melodramatic John Mayer sound that I still love but more laid back and a little more bass. I've used this playlist recently for breezy walks in the park.
Song to check out: Badge and Gun

Feeling a little more hipster? This one's for you. My friend introduced this band to me recently after she ended up on a trip with their lead singer. Boy Named Banjo, is a group of college guys out of Tennessee that play a folk-Americana sound. It's easy listening and it's freaking good. This has been in my ears for coffee shop reads and library homework time. Check out their other album Long Story Short if you want to hear even more.
Song to check out: Letter to a Lonely Girl

Last but not least 1989. Honestly, I'm a little embarrassed about how much I am obsessed with this album but really, it's so good. She's made the switch from country to completely pop and it was a great move. These songs make you want to dance and the music video for Blank Space blew me away. If you haven't heard this one yet, you're missing out.
Song to check out: Style

I've been absolutely obsessed with these albums lately. What do you think about them? What have you been listening to over and over again lately?!

Here's to a Productive Week!

Well it's Monday again. These are the days that I always sit down and make a large to-do list for my upcoming list. There are always those things that I can easily mark off and then there are the things that I push back, and push back, and push back... I'm pushing myself this week to make sure that I'm on top of these little tasks that I decide to get done "later".

Here's to a productive week!

Today is going to be packed with classes, group projects and meetings but it's good knowing the weekend is right around the corner. Just a few more hours!

My Holiday Survival Kit + Man Crates

It's getting to be that time of year again! Whew this year has really flown by! Nonetheless it's time to get in the spirit and prepare yourself for this holiday season! It seems that each year, the holidays start earlier and earlier! Radio stations are already playing Christmas music and stockings are already being sold in stores. Whew that seems a little soon but with Thanksgiving right around the corner, it's time to start thinking about these things!

The holiday season is full of dinners, parties and gift-giving gatherings! My Holiday Survival Kit is full of all the things that I need for these occasions! All of these items serve dual purposes during this festive time so let's start at the top!

Scarves // For me, scarves serve a dual purpose. First off, they are a great way to accessorize a simple black dress for a holiday gathering or dress up a pair of jeans for less formal occasions. Secondly, scarves are such an easy gift! A nice scarf is one of my favorite gifts to get. They are something that I love having but wouldn't personally pay to have myself. If you're struggling to find a gift for your best friend stop by J.Crew and she'll be thrilled!

Bottle of Wine // With holiday party invitations coming in the mail as we speak, go ahead and stock up on a few bottles of red wine. Bring a bottle over for dinner as a simple thank you. Additionally, this is a super easy last minute gift for a friend. Tie a ribbon around it and attach a card and you're good to go!

Red Lipstick // Holiday parties call for red lips! Get in the winter mood with a darker shade than you typically wear! A bold red lipstick is also a great stocking stuffer!

Riding Boots // While these are a big-ticket item as a gift they're a great piece to have during this season. They are a classic touch with a cozy sweater dress but also the perfect boots to tuck jeans into and pick out your next Christmas tree!

Holiday Cards // As you know, I'm a sucker for stationary and Rifle Paper Co. is always my go-to. Attach one of these one-of-a-kind whimsical cards to spruce up your wrapping paper or send one of these to your family members in another state!

If someone sent me this Holiday Survival Kit I would be a happy camper! Now you know what to give your girl friends for gifts this season however, what do you do for the guys in your life?! In comes, Man Crates! This is one of the best ideas I've seen in a while! {Check out their website here!} Man Crates sends your guy a themed gift basket of your choosing however, here's the catch - he has to open it with a crowbar! How awesome is that?! Pick any theme from Poker, to GrillMaster, to Whiskey Barware, to the Clean Shave Crate! This idea is fantastic and perfect for those guys that are impossible to buy for! Head over to their website and pick out your favorite crate for you dad, brother or significant other!

What's in your Holiday Survival Kit?

We Need to Fail.

To be completely honest and simply blunt, you know what really sucks? Failure. It might be an inconceivably low score on a test, a mercy-ruled loss in a finals game or a lost club election. No matter what it is, failure is never an easy pill to swallow. It can hurt ten times harder than a sock in the stomach and, no matter the degree, it will always be a pivotal moment. Failure pushes us towards a crossroads where we have to make a decision: What are you going to do next? Do you drop your favorite class or do you study your butt off for the next test? Do you pack your bags or do you start practicing tomorrow for next year's championship?

Yes, failure can feel pretty crappy but here's the thing: we need failure.  If failure doesn't hurt, then you're not trying hard enough. If you haven't experienced this devastating failure then how do you know if you've truly found your passion? If you're not experiencing this punch-in-the-stomach kind of failure then you're not going for enough. Nothing worth fighting for ever came easy and, even though it hurts, we do need it every once in a while. Failure humbles us when we're rolling on a string of successes, it reminds us of the risks we're taking and, ultimately, why we're taking them.

Although failure can ruin a good week and plant you on your bed with a bottle of wine and a tub of Ben and Jerry's, we need this it. Failure is a stepping stone to success. It's not the end of your dreams. We need to fail before we can win. We need to fail to measure our successes but also to measure our passion and our drive. We need failure to knock us on our butts every once in a while purely to remind us that we can pick ourselves back up. "Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing our enthusiasm". Success comes from channeling your emotions after failure into motivation and determination in order to brave the next challenge. Failure shouldn't be fatal, it should be fuel. We can't fully appreciate our successes without failure and we can never achieve full success without a few bumps in the road. It may be hard, but it's worth it and we are better for it.

What do you think about this? Have you ever had a time that failure aided your success?

Spring Shoe Shopping in November?!

Shopping for Spring?

Fall sales are the best and right now, Nordstrom is having a {killer shoe sale}. They have dozens of cute suede booties, leather flats and winter boots that have me drooling. Don't get me wrong, I'm eyeing all of these fall transition pieces however what I really have my eyes on are the sandals. Yes, you heard me right. Fall sales are the best time in the year to get sandals at their cheapest price. Obviously you won't be able to enjoy these babies as soon as they arrive in the mail but it's the time to invest in your spring wardrobe and really get the biggest bang out of your buck! While scouring the sales racks of Nordstrom, online that is, I came across so many spring shoes that I need in my closet! Here are some of my picks!

What do you think about spring shoe shopping in November?!

A Recipe For: Friendsgiving

The concept of "Friendsgiving" is something that I've seen buzzing around the internet lately and I really love it! Thanksgiving will always be one of my favorite holidays. Food, family and football - I mean it doesn't get much better than that! Being a college student, I am always ready to hop in the car and take the trek back home for this festive fall holiday but with all of my roommates back in different states with our families we never get to celebrate together! Luckily, Friendsgiving picks up right where Thanksgiving ends! It let's you spend time together, eating and talking about all that you're thankful for with, well, your friends!

So how do you do Friendsgiving? Here's my recipe!

Step 1: Invitations // Send out some DIY printed invitations in the mail or just shoot an e-card with a talking turkey! Make sure all of your friends are on the list and be prepared for a packed dinner table!

Step 2: Potluck // As the host you are responsible for the turkey of course however let your friends bring the rest! In the invitations, divide up the food by alphabetical order to make sure that your cranberry sauce, baked apples or stuffing is not left out! Also, don't forget the apple pie!

Step 3: Decorate // Set the scene! Friendsgiving banners, leafy centerpieces and chalkboard seating markers add a nice and festive touch to your friendly feast!

Step 4: Give Thanks // Once all your guests have arrived and everyone is seated be sure to give thanks! Go around the table and have this happy discussion with your friends. This is what makes it so great!

Step 5: Eat // Need I say more?

** This post is part of the MM Linkup with Corbin and Laura Leigh from The Classy South and Louella! Check out the other bloggers that were part of the Linkup through this link! **

Dig into the food and enjoy this Friendsgiving! Plan a time before everyone is with their families and spread this holiday to all of the important people in your life. What do you think of Friendsgiving?!

#FridayFinds: OK Go Is Back At It!

Does anyone remember OK Go's music video for "Here it Goes Again" a few years back? They coordinated their dancing on treadmills and it definitely resulted some gnarly bruises and burns when my friends and I tried to recreate it… Anyways! They're back again and truly, better than ever! This music video is absolutely fantastic and I'm digging the song too! Slash what are those amazing wheeled machines? Take some time to admire their creativity skills and get pumped because it's Friday!!!

Woohoo!

So You Want To Be An Actor? Then do it.

I found this image the other day and it really fits how I've been feeling lately. I'm so guilty We're all guilty about pushing our little aspirations aside, because of inevitable obstacles that naturally to get in our way. These obstacles take a few forms whether it be time, additional hurdles or the biggest hindrance, ourselves.

Obviously time will always be something that gets in our way but time should only motivate us to quit thinking so much. Quit hesitating and do whatever it is that the little voice in your head is telling you to do. With the acknowledgement of a constant ticking clock, it is even more important to engage ourselves in the things that we truly find both engaging and rewarding. Additional hurdles will always be in place. Don't let these hurdles weed you out whether they are interviews and applications or coursework and internships. Don't be turned away at the mere sight of these obstacles. The road less traveled tends to be greener.

Lastly, and most importantly, we need to stop getting in our own way. One of the main issues is that, often, we don't realize that we're doing this. So you've always wanted to be an actor? You start to tell yourself to be realistic, you rattle off the statistics of salaries and job availability and then top it off with a touch of judgement. Why?! Maybe it is the positive, glass-half-full thinker in me that's saying this but we need to stop. If you want to be an actor then go for it. I'm not saying that we'll achieve all of our dreams every time we try but is that really the point? You can try all your life to step onto that Broadway stage with the ending outcome of only being turned away at the door but if you never pursued that dream in the back of your mind that door never had the possibility to be opened. Which is more rewarding? This you have to decide.

My take on this is that if you want to be a professional basketball player, then do it. Lawyer? Do it. Open your own bakery? Do it. Marketing Consultant in the Fashion Industry? Quit making excuses and go after it. Don't put yourself down and convince yourself that it's impossible. Work hard, put in the time and dedicate yourself to those things that you've always wanted to do. Schedule your trip to the Grand Canyon and apply for that internship in Milan. Impossible is nothing because here's the thing: Someone's gotta do it. It might as well be you.

What are your thoughts on this? What have you always wanted to do?

October Favorites

So these are definitely one of the more random assortment of things I've ever had for a monthly favorites post but each of them made the list because I've definitely been over-using them all! So here we go!

1. To-Do Lists // {here} //  I'm a self-proclaimed list addict but it's the only way that I can remember everything! I make multiple lists throughout the day to keep up with all of the little things that I need to get done. I've had these Rifle Paper Co. pads for over a year and they're finally getting down to their last few pages. I love their compact size and the floral designs!

2. Neutrogena Face Wash // I've definitely struggled finding the right face wash that is the perfect balance of cleaning my skin without drying it out. I've used Neutrogena Deep Clean products for a while but the process of moisturizing, then the moisturizer causing my face to break out, then more Deep Cleaning products is such a hassle and pretty frustrating. So to find a solution, I spent an embarrassing amount of time in the Walgreens skin aisle looking at every product in all different price ranges. I grabbed a few and this is the one I've loved the best. It cleans my skin but it's mild enough that it doesn't dry out my face even if I use it everyday. It is available at any store like Walgreens or Target and if you have this same problem that I do, I'd definitely recommend it.

3. Ponte Knit Skirts // {here} // At the beginning of the month Old Navy was having a pretty great sale so I went ahead and bought one of these Knit Circle skirts. When I got it in the mail it fit absolutely perfectly. It's longer than the normal skater skirt going just a few inches above my knee and it also has a more interesting and flattering fit. The knit material is pretty thick and is great for the fall transition weather. I waited till the next sale and grabbed two more colors. These are so easy to pair with anything from a button down to a simple long sleeved tshirt. I'm loving these skirts and grab them while you can! P.S. they're on sale right now!

4. Puffer Vests // {here} // I bought this Lands End puffer vest a few years ago and it's been one of my best investments. The down material keeps me super warm and the green really goes with anything. If you want to prep it up a bit, get it monogrammed! Lands End also has this vest in patterns and I'm eyeing some of those right now!

5. Sonix iPhone 6 Case // {here} // I recently ordered an iPhone 6 after my 4s has slowly deteriorated. Unfortunately it is projected to come in mid-November. On the plus side, this gave me time to shop around for a case that had great reviews on protection but also wasn't bulky or boring. I settled on this Sonix case with a clear back to show the gold on the phone and I'm digging the leopard print. After actually having it in my hand the case looks sturdy and well made. Check out their other designs on their website!

Although random I'm loving each and every one of these monthly favorites. Did any of these make your list this month?

Twas A Happy Halloween!

Halloween will always be one of my favorite holidays and this weekend lived up to my expectations. In college it turns into a multi-day event but I'm not complaining. Getting the opportunity to pick more than one festive costume is a plus in my book! This past weekend I started out with Wednesday Addams and then the White Rabbit from Alice and Wonderland. Group costumes are always a fun way to have a great time with friends so on Friday I paired with my little as Alice and it definitely was a hit! Dressing up is super fun but we were all pretty tuckered out by Saturday night and settled on the couch to watch a little Hocus Pocus. It definitely was  great Halloween weekend!

What did you dress up as for Halloween?
